RESUMO

In this study, the behavior of heavy metal transformation during the co-thermal treatment of hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HWIFA) and Fe-containing hazardous waste (including hazardous waste incineration bottom slag (HWIBS) and electroplating sludge (ES)) was investigated. The findings demonstrated that such a treatment effectively reduced the static leaching toxicity of Cr and Pb. Moreover, when the treatment temperature exceeded 1000 °C, the co-thermal treated sample exhibited low concentrations of dynamically leached Cr, Pb, and Zn, indicating that these heavy metals were successful detoxified. Thermodynamic analyses and phase transformation results suggested that the formation of spinel and the gradual disappearance of chromium dioxide in the presence of Fe-containing hazardous wastes contributed to the solidification of chromium. Additionally, the efficient detoxification of Pb and Zn was attributed to their volatilization and entry into the liquid phase during the co-thermal treatment process. Therefore, this study sets an excellent example of the co-thermal treatment of hazardous wastes and the control of heavy metal pollution during the treatment process.

Based on the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, the feasibility of co-vitrification of hazardous waste incineration fly ash (FA) and hazardous waste sludge (HWS) was verified. In the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 ternary system diagram, the melting point of the system gradually decreases with an appropriate increase in SiO2 content when the CaO/Al2O3 ratio is determined to be approximately 1. The TG-DSC results revealed that the liquid phase generation temperature in the FA and HWS mixture system was significantly lower than those of FA and HWS individually owing to the different CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3 contents; this is consistent with the results of the theoretical melting characteristics analysis, which show that the melting characteristic temperatures can be reduced by controlling the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 ratio in the system. The co-vitrification experimental results confirmed that a vitreous content above 92%, a loss ratio on acid dissolution less than 1.74%, and leaching toxicity of heavy metals lower than 0.15 mg/L could be obtained by adjusting the CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3 contents in the FA and HWS system to 20 wt%-32.5 wt%, 35 wt%-61 wt% and 14 wt%-32.5 wt%, respectively, and under a melting temperature of 1350 °C.

Mycotoxin contamination of food and feed is a major concern in sub-Sahara African countries, particularly Nigeria. It represents a significant limit to health of human, livestock as well as the international trade. Aflatoxins, fumonisins, ochratoxin, zearalenone, deoxynivalenol and beauvericin are the major mycotoxins recognised in the aetiology of food safety challenges that precipitated countless number of diseases. In Nigeria, aflatoxins and fumonisin found in nearly all crops are the most common mycotoxins of economic and health importance such as sorghum, maize and groundnuts. Thus, consumption of food contaminated with mycotoxins are inevitable, hence the need for adequate regulation is necessary in these frontier economies as done in many developed economies to ensure food safety for human and animals. In low and middle-income countries, especially Nigeria, there is lack of awareness and sufficient information on the risk associated with consequent of mycotoxin contamination on wellbeing of human, animals health and the economy. It is based on the foregoing that this paper summarized the status of mycotoxin present in Nigerian food and feeds relative to the global regulatory standards. This aimed at preventing consuming mycotoxin contaminated food stuff while confronting its associated challenges. Suggestions on some possible control strategies to mitigate vending mycotoxin food and feeds were made.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) and benzyl-isothiocyanate (BITC) on fungal growth and Ochratoxin A (OTA) production by Aspergillus ochraceus, A. carbonarius and A. niger. Here, we found that spore germination and fungal growth of the three fungi were significantly inhibited when the concentration of AITC and BITC was higher than 1.25 µg/mL. The inhibitory effect of AITC or BITC on A. carbonaceus and A. ochraceus was significantly stronger than that of A. niger. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the mycelia of all three fungi were changed by AITC and BITC. Compared with A. ochraceus and A. carbonarius, the damage to A. niger was lower. For OTA production, AITC and BITC could significantly down-regulated the expression of all five OTA biosynthesis genes in A. niger and A. carbonarius. In A. ochraceus, although several OTA biosynthesis genes were up-regulated, the key PKS gene was down-regulated by AITC and BITC. Twenty-five µg/mL of AITC or BITC could reduce the infection of the three fungi on grapes with inhibition rates of 28%-36% during 14 days and prolong the shelf life of grapes. In maize, the OTA production of the three fungi was significantly reduced by 25 µg/mL of AITC and BITC with the inhibition rates 68.04%-93.49% and 65.87%-75.45%, respectively. These results suggest that AITC and BITC can be used as natural fungicides to prevent A. niger, A. carbonarius and A. ochraceus from infecting grapes and maize and control OTA contamination.

The occurrence of deoxynivalenol (DON) in animal feed is a serious issue for the livestock industry. Approaches using mycotoxin adsorbents are key to decreasing mycotoxin carryover from contaminated feed to animals. In this paper, a novel functional microsphere adsorbent comprising an alginate/carboxymethyl cellulose sodium composite loaded with calcium (SA/CMC-Ca) was prepared by an emulsification process to adsorb DON from polluted corn steep liquor (CSL) containing DON at a concentration of 3.60 µg/mL. Batch experiments were conducted under different experimental conditions: CSL volumes, reaction times, desorption times, and microsphere recyclability. Results showed that 5 g of microspheres reacted with 5 mL of DON-polluted CSL for 5 min, the microspheres can be recycled 155 times, and the maximum DON adsorption for the microspheres was 2.34 µg/mL. During recycling, microspheres were regenerated by deionized water every time; after the microspheres were cleaned, DON in the deionized water was degraded by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 70 °C for 1 h at pH 12. The mechanism for physical adsorption and hydrogen bonding was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing that the microsphere adsorbent SA/CMC-Ca adsorbs DON. Therefore, we suggest that using microsphere absorbents would be a possible way to address DON-contaminated CSL issues in animal feed.

Assessment of the effectiveness of cancer therapy traditionally relies on comparison of tumor images acquired before and after therapeutic intervention by inspection of gross anatomical images to evaluate changes in tumor size. The potential for imaging to provide additional insights related to the therapeutic impact would be enhanced if a specific parameter or combination of parameters could be identified that reflect tissue changes at the cellular or physiological level. This information could also provide a more sensitive and earlier indicator of treatment response in an individual animal or patient. Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging can detect relatively small changes in tissue structure at the cellular level and thus provides an opportunity to quantitatively and serially follow therapeutic-induced changes in solid tumors. This article provides an overview of the use of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging as a surrogate marker for quantitating treatment responsiveness in both preclinical and clinical studies.
